Planeshift is a free MMORPG. The game engine is the brilliant open source CrystalSpace and the planeshift engine is also open source. The game itself is still in Alpha, but don't let that put you off. It really is very playable already and when it's finished it's going to be excellent.
When you register your account and sign in for the first time you will need to create your character. First you need to pick a race and a name, then you can decided on your characters back story. Most of this can be filled out automatically for you by selecting the quick option and then selecting a life path. Alternatively if you want to decided on everything that happened to your character through their life up until the present you can do that too. It's an RPG, so you should role play your character appropriately. Planeshift is a medieval fantasy so there are plenty of elves, dwarfs, and magicians walking around. There are many skills for you to master ranging from magic to glass blowing. Some may be more useful than others... So go jump on a server and get yourself a quest!
